Did I mention cuts?
The opening session of the 2009 Utah Legislature (Monday, January 26th) will bring with it the hot items up for action: BUDGET CUTS.
State lawmakers will be looking at a budget where the Governor is calling for state agencies to cut up to 7% with many legislators looking at pushing for double that amount.
The chopping block includes drastic cuts to services in Public Education, Meals on Wheels (provides free or low cost meals to seniors and homebound), Medicaid (serves low income people without other ways of paying for healthcare. ), General Assistance Program (serves people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless who have been determined by a doctor to be unable to work for at least 30 days.), to name just a few and in addition to a myriad of other services provided to citizens of our state.
The effects of such cuts will be spiral in that siginificant impacts will ensue in our already tanking economy. Layoffs will mean that more people will be without income which will mean less spending which will mean business will suffer an lay off *their* employees which will mean…..well, you get the picture. And it’s not pretty.
