More Rallying on The Hill

Why we will be protesting at the State Capitol Building tomorrow afternoon

posted by Bill Tibbitts at One Utah

I know a person who claims she was involved with Act Up in another state during the 1980s and so she values taking direct action to confront complacent and powerful people but, she says, that kind of thing does not work in Utah.  When people tell me that kind of thing I always wonder what assumptions they are making.  Do they believe that human nature is different here in Utah?  Do they think elected officials here have thinner skin than they do in other places?

I believe this kind of cynicism is the unofficial religion of the conservative movement.  ”Politicians are all hopeless” says Rush Limbaugh as he encourages you to endure your fate with a laugh at those slightly worse off than yourself.  The cynical, armchair quarterback, “progressive” is no better for the world than the passive Rushamaniac.  As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, ”In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

The leadership of the Utah Legislature is rushing to cut thousands of  low  income Utahns from our state healthcare programs before Obama can push his economic stimulus bill through Congress– even though that bill will give Utah all the money it needs to keep it’s healthcare programs whole.  Tomorrow members of the Anti-Hunger Action Committee, the Disabled Rights Action Committee and other organizations will be going to the Capitol and demanding the our elected officials slow down, take a deep breath, and not make these life endangering cuts.  We will be meeting in the cafeteria in House Building at 1:30 PM.  Anyone who is able to join us is welcome.
