Students from colleges and universities will rally at the Capitol today to support the Governor’s funding proposal for Higher Education, according to an article in Standard.Net
Students from across Utah will rally Friday at the state Capitol to encourage the Legislature to support Gov. Jon M. Huntsman’s budget cut proposal for higher education.
“We are not trying to gain immunity from budget cuts. We know that this is a hard time for the state economically and financially,” said Jackson Olsen, student body executive vice president. “We are trying to get them to support the governor’s proposal, which is less drastic and allows more time for implementation.”
The Legislature has proposed a 19 percent budget cut while the Governor’s proposal is 11percent.
“I’m hoping that it’s just a really positive event,” said Dani Babbel, as USU student creator of the Facebook group “Save Higher Education in Utah!” ” … and that they are effectively demonstrating their concerns for this issue in a respectful way.”
Some institutions have canceled classes with professors supporting students who want to attend the rally which begins at 10:30am with an address by some legislators to the students.
