Let's not resort to name calling.. I was born in Utah and lived here until I was 16... at which point my family moved to California. Believe me when I say, no state is perfect when it comes to lawmaking. Majority Rules, applies to other states as well. I had a close family member who was in the Utah State Legislature for many years, so my opinions are based on my experience as a citizen not on my religious beliefs. I believe in choices and I believe in the punishment fitting the crime. I have three daughters 17 and older and they have freedom to choose within legal limitations. My 19 yr. old chose to consume a alcohol on New Years Eve. She is a full time student(I don't pay for her tuition) and she works full time. Pays for her own car and insurance. She was not driving and in fact had arranged not to do so. Police arrived and she was issued an alcohol ticket. A hefty fine and suspension of her license(no provisions) for 1yr was her punishment... oh unless she pays for and completes a counseling course , at which point her suspension is reduced to 90 days. she has NEVER been in trouble, and now she can't even drive to work or school? WTH ? Those are both worthy tasks she needs to be doing to insure a productive future! Get a grip and lets educate our youth, instead of making them bitter and hopeless! where is the incentive to keep moving in the right direction? She will be paying all of her fees and stood up and took responsibility, shouldn't the adults of Utah making the laws do the same? I am pretty sure I have seen a large number of adults in our community committing crimes, that actually hurt someone else, get off with less punishment, including law enforcement officials... my daughter made a mistake and learned not to do it again, when will the people making and dishing"IT" out do the same? This is an easy money making scam! Not to mention the fact that her insurance will be affected! She was no where near a car !?

I would suspect that this is not about preventing divorce in abusive marriages.
It isn’t fair to charge smokers a higher Medicaid co-pay when others who put their own or others' health at risk do not pay a similar surcharge. In fact, it’s downright discriminatory. How about the millions of dollars large families cost the state in addition to the costs incurred by the obese or those who consume diabetes-producing foods on a daily basis — both are common among non-smokers here in Utah. Or, consider someone who has been severely abused, thereby suffering lifelong psychological problems and regularly seeking help that Medicaid covers. Do your research, guys.

Moreover, the state already is taxing smoking products at an unprecedented rate.

I also wonder if Medicaid cost comparisons have been conducted between smokers vs. other vices. Smokers die a lot younger; could that compensate for how much Medicaid pays for their illnesses relative to the longer term costs of covering certain forms of diabetes, heart problems, etc.

I hope civil liberties’ organizations threaten to sue the state of Utah. Unless and until the inequities are addressed, it's just not RIGHT to pick on smokers.

Please do not touch this. So many people depend on the extra daylight to be with family and friends after work hours. It also allows people to do yard work, exercise, and attend their children's outdoor activities. This is one of the great benefits to the summertime. The extra daylight in the morning and the evenings is a great plus to getting people outside and exercising all of which cut down on obesity and health issues. There has got to be a better bill this lawmaker could be spending his time on.
